The Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists was held in Perth in late April 2022, following a cancelled meeting in 2020. The predominantly virtual format attracted delegates from Australasia and internationally to catch up on cutting edge science, and the culture and practice of anaesthesia, pain and perioperative medicine.
PBM was well represented at the meeting, with back-to-back sessions on the Monday afternoon.
- Dr Anastazia Keegan (Red Cross Blood Service Haematologist) chaired a panel discussing advances in component transfusion
- Professor Michael Reede (ADF) spoke on his research on frozen platelets and EPO in trauma patients
- Dr James Winearls (GCUH) discussed fibrinogen concentrate and its applications in traumatic haemorrhage
- Dr Warren Pavey (Fiona Stanley Hospital, Murdoch University) presented research on the use of prothrombinex during bypass-induced coagulopathy.
- Shannon Farmer chaired a session focusing on perioperative anaemia.
- Dr Keegan also discussed some of the emergent agents for managing anaemia of chronic disease
- A/Prof Lachlan Miles (University of Melbourne, Austin Health) presented data on non-anaemic iron deficiency perioperatively
- Prof James Isbister outlined the changes associated with ageing/frailty and the haematological system.
WAPBM’s Dr Hamish Mace, Anaesthetist, was in attendance and reported that it was an extremely educational and thought-provoking afternoon.
