Administrators and PBM
The Western Australian Patient Blood Management Program demonstrated significant reductions in mortality, total complications, hospital length of stay and transfusion.
It has generated cost savings from blood product usage of AUD $18.5 million, however with the hospital costs of administering a transfusion added, the gross savings are estimated to be between AUD $80-100 million. Implementation of a robust PBM program has now become a public health issue with health authorities pursuing its implementation worldwide based on the successes demonstrated in Western Australia.
“The Western Australia Department of Health should be congratulated for their courageous and visionary decision 10 years ago to support this statewide PBM program and the local champions for implementing the program for many years. With the current achievements, this program is clearly number one worldwide and as such has set new standards.”
